One of the best ways to promote and grow your bath and body business is to have a blog. Blogging helps keep your website (and your company) front and center in the search engines and can boost sales. To keep your blog updated regularly while still managing all the other pieces of your beauty business, you must be able to quickly and consistently create quality content. There’s a direct correlation between the amount of content (how often) you write and the number of visitors you get to your website.
So how do you consistently crank out quality content without feeling overwhelmed? Here are some suggestions, along with a valuable resource.
Keep a Running List of Potential Topics
On your computer, or a notepad (I LOVE the Notepad feature on all my Apple products for this!), there should be a list of potential topics you can write about. Whenever you have an idea for a potential post, write it on the list.
Look for inspiration all around you. Ask yourself, “How can I use this example in a blog post or newsletter article?” or “Would my current and potential customers be interested in this?” and write down everything that comes to mind. Use this notepad as a brain dump for everything you can think of as a potential topic. This doesn’t mean you have to write posts on each topic – in fact, there’ll be some on the list that will make you laugh and say ‘what was I thinking?!?’ but it’s getting you in the habit of keeping your mind open to new ideas and possibilities and to see how pieces of your everyday life can be used to help educate and entertain readers and promote your business.
When it’s time to write content, you can pull out the list and simply start writing. There’ll be no writer’s block when you have a long list of ideas for you to write about.
Start by Making a Quick Outline
Once you have selected your topic, start by writing out the main points. Brainstorm all the things you want to talk about and quickly jot them down. This helps you structure your thoughts, so your writing will flow.
Write Quickly, Without Editing
Once your outline is done, write, and write fast. Don’t edit, don’t worry about grammar, spelling errors or punctuation. Write in a natural, conversational voice, and don’t filter what you’re writing.
If you try to edit before the post is finished, you can get stuck spending too much time making corrections and then find it hard to keep moving to finish the rest of the post. So keep writing, not worrying about how it looks or sounds at first, keep writing until the first draft is finished. At that point, step away from the post for a bit and then return to it with fresh eyes and clear head to edit and then publish.
Let Yourself Shine
One of the biggest pieces of advice I can share is to let your personality shine through your posts. Let readers get to know you (without using your blog as therapy) – if you have a quirky sense of humor and all your product scents are named after little known comic book characters, let that shine! Readers will connect with you and your passions and you’ll find that they often become the most loyal customers, because they not only love the products, but they love the person behind the products – YOU. If you’re writing in your authentic voice and not trying to edit or censor yourself, you’ll write much faster.
A Content Creation Resource
I know how overwhelming it can be to write blog posts for a bath and body business, especially when there’s products to make, package and ship, emails to answer and social media updates to post! So I’ve created the Content Creation Blueprint just for beauty entrepreneurs who know they need to create content, and simply don’t know how or don’t have a lot of time to spare. All the details can be found at this link, so if you’re already maxed out on multitasking and want to be walked through a simple, stress-free way to create an almost unlimited amount of content for your blog, social media and newsletters, check it out!
